Bio
I am currently a nurse manager for a 30 bed Surgical Trauma and Telemetry unit at a Level I trauma center in Denver, Colorado. Prior to this, I was a staff nurse in the Emergency Department. I have work in Med/Surg, Critical Care, Hospice, Rehab and pretty much anywhere I am needed. Prior to my career in nursing I worked in healthcare finance and management. I feel this give me a perspective on nursing that managers never see. Away from work I spend all my time with my wife and daughter. I enjoy running and swimming, and am a die-hard NASCAR fan. So, Sundays you can find me watching the race with my daughter.

Nursing unions

Posted July 29, 2010 | By Rob Cameron | 2 comments

I’ve blogged about how I felt that unions are only out for one thing, that is to increase the power of the union. Not the power of its members, the nurses, but the power of the union leaders. But…now I’m a union member.

Married to a non-nurse

Posted July 17, 2010 | By Rob Cameron | 1 comment

How can life at home be for a person married to nurse?  I mean we sit around and talk about bodily functions, fluids and pretty disgusting stuff while we are eating and don’t think twice about it. But if your partner is a non-nurse who is an accountant or something like that, it may not [...]

Times are tough

Posted July 16, 2010 | By Rob Cameron | 9 comments

I am looking for a new job. I have submitted at least 15 applications to various hospitals and clinics, for various units, for staff, charge nurse and management positions. I have received “no” from about half of those already.

Nervous

Posted July 10, 2010 | By Rob Cameron | 1 comment

Tomorrow I start my new position as affiliate faculty for one of the college of nursing programs.  That’s a fancy name for a clinical instructor.  I am pretty excited about it, but at the same time I am pretty nervous.  How the heck do I monitor seven students on two floors and ensure they don’t [...]

Make it big

Posted July 9, 2010 | By Rob Cameron | 2 comments

If you are going to make a change, I say make it a big one.  That’s what I am doing.  I am having problems at work right now, I am not at liberty to say, but I will as soon as I know what is happening to me.  So this week I have been interviewing [...]

Nurse evaluations

Posted June 28, 2010 | By Rob Cameron | 1 comment

One of the hard parts about being a nurse manager is evaluating another nurse’s performance. Looking another nurse in the eye, who is your co-worker and sometimes even friend, and telling them how well, or bad, they perform can be difficult.

Opportunities

Posted June 18, 2010 | By Rob Cameron | no comments

When I was a staff nurse, and an opportunity came to orient to charge, I jumped on it. I was ready to move into a full time charge position or a manager position on the unit I worked in, but they were never coming around…

Does your nurse manager see you as confident?

Posted June 15, 2010 | By Rob Cameron | 3 comments

Questioning yourself is normal. But if you compare yourself to your preceptor, who has several more years of experience, you’re only going to drive yourself crazy.
