We love this photo and inspirational quote–not just for what it says, but for who it was said by. Suzanne Gordon is an award-winning journalist and author of 12 books. Her words about nurses in the poem below has been widely shared across nurse communities on the web.
Gordon’s official website says she “is a popular lecturer. Much of her professional focus is on problem-solving the communication issues that can occur between doctors, nurses and patients.” Gordon is the author of seven books including Life Support: Three Nurses on the Front Lines, originally published by Little, Brown & Co. and the co-editor of the Culture and Politics of Healthcare Work series at Cornell University Press. She is a visiting professor at the University of Maryland School of Nursing, an affiliated scholar with the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine’s Wilson Centre, and, with Lisa Hayes, has written a play about patient safety and teamwork entitled Bedside Manners.

Registered Nurse
Just recently a doctor who I highly respect paid me the nicest of compliments… he told me that he and two other doctors were talking about nurses when my name came up – that they agreed I was one of the best nurses in our hospital. I smiled but I could have cried. What a wonderful thing to hear – and I had a witness – otherwise I might have thought I dreamed it!
