Red Cross issues call for blood drives to aid Hurricane Sandy effort

Hurricane Sandy has hit hard those along the Eastern Seaboard, and our thoughts are with the residents who were in its path. For those who are not in danger, the Red Cross has issued a call for blood drives and donations.

Like most other activities in the Northeast, many scheduled blood drives had to be cancelled due to the impending storm. The Red Cross said the nearly 100 blood drives that have already been cancelled may result in the loss of as many as 3,200 blood and platelet products. The organization asks anyone in areas not affected by the storm to consider donating blood or volunteering at blood drives.

For more information, you can visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

The organization also hosts the Red Cross Safe and Well website, which allows families to connect during emergencies.
