Nursing brings out my best

At home and with my friends I am silly, loud, outspoken, and say things that are off-the-cuff. At work I am a calm, critical thinker who doesn’t get my feathers ruffled…

Nurses go clique-ety clique

Can nurses be catty? And would more men on the unit change the clique-y atmosphere that prevails?

Hospital personalities – a humorous walk through the halls

Let’s take a fun look at the cast of characters who populate the wards, halls and rooms where you work.

Playing well in the sandbox

We are the coordinators of care, the wranglers, and the sieve where almost all of our patients’ care is poured and filtered. So if we can’t work well with the team, our patients are in trouble.

End of shift guilt

Ever have tasks that spilled-over into the next shift? I know how it feels to be on the receiving end. I’ve taken shift report from some pretty horrible nurses. Nurses who failed to chart meds from the beginning of their shift (8 or 12 hrs). I’ve cleaned up messes in patients rooms that were made at the beginning of their shift or even a previous shift. I’ve gotten my rear-end chewed out by a distraught family member because they weren’t called and updated properly on something I wasn’t even present for!

We have recently had some pretty malicious gossip that has severely impacted some of my coworkers’ lives.

Unbelievable!

But I can say, that with the economy the way it is, and insurance being so hard to obtain, it is hard for me to understand why there would be a bias against those people who have to resort to using government programs (legitimately) or have no options at all. And why in the world would that make a difference in the care they receive? It blows my mind.

Work parties

I just went to a birthday party for one of my co-workers the other day and was pleasantly surprised with what a great time I had. Normally, I don’t go to many work functions just because between work, school, and having a family I don’t have a lot of free time.

How to best manage conflict

We are immersed in a profession that pushes us to constantly deal with conflict just by nature of our work, stressful hospital environment, and overwhelming bunches of women all working together day in and day out. How well do you manage conflict that arises in your workplace?

Nurses are non-compliant?

I asked the question of my fellow co-workers, “Why are nurses such bad patients? Why do we skip doctor appointments, ignore prescribed treatments, and/or neglect ourselves. Why are we so non-compliant?”
