    I agree with Katie. The med-surg experience enables the new nurse to learn the fundamentals of bedside nursing care.

    I totally agree w starting on a med-surg type unit. After 30+ yrs of nursing and a PhD, I remember learning the essentials of assessing abnormal pts and learning time mgt. Early in your professional career you may be unsure of where you really want to go. Nursing allows for many transitions and progressions but being an expert in the basics is essential.
