Video: “I’m just a nurse,” a touching short documentary

We love finding inspiring nursing videos online and were happy to stumble upon this short documentary from Ryerson University in Canada. Posted to YouTube, the video is one of the university’s online learning tools used by instructors to spark discussion in student forums.

Throughout the video, several nurses and admin speak about what nurses do, what the general public thinks they do and how that affects their lives and career. We especially love a bit where they go “man on the street” and ask passerby what they think nurses do. They also speak at length about how nurses are represented in media and how that might impact the general public’s opinion on nursing.

Watch the video in its entirety here:

What do you think? How do you think the public (including your family and friends!) views nursing today in your corner of the world, and how does that make you feel?

  1. Hi
Thank you so much for sharing this amazing post. Nurses are angels. Nursing is a noble profession and the nurses are the back bone of the health care system. Nurses are always there to care for you while you wake and while you sleep.

Thank you for the video. It is very telling in that a lot of people still consider themselves just a nurse where they do only listen t what the doctors says and nothing else. Now, nurses have autonomy and have a voice into the nursing profession. Nursing aspects and concepts have come a long way as well. Nursing is much more in depth and consists of a lot more schooling. Thank you for the information.

I have heard that so many times when nurses talk to me about their nursing experience. People tell me that nurses are a great group of people in the medical field and being a nurse myself I see that they are a great group of people. Nurses not only do medical work, but they also listen to the patient talk and they are they ears and eyes for their patients. I always say that nurses are angels and they really are. They are people who are called to do what they do. Nurses are so important and they are in great need today and in the future and they are very special in the healthcare system.

Nurses are extremely important to everyone in the healthcare field. A nurse is a true gift. Over the years, I have come to accept the fact that I am more than just a nurse. I am a friend, a gift, a human being, a treasure, and a really good listener. When I just started nursing, I thought to myself that I am just a nurse with set rules and duties and can never expand myself to other roles. Now that I am older, I have realized that nurses do so much more than just help the sick and injured. I am thankful that my eyes have opened and my nursing roles are expanded.
