Senior citizens may soon be eligible for a fourth COVID-19 vaccine shot. Pfizer is expected to request authorization this week.
The proposal to add a fourth dose to the vaccination regimen would provide continued protection for those over the age of 65, who have been hit the hardest by pandemics.
The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control must approve the request. The person who spoke about the upcoming Pfizer authorization request spoke on the condition of anonymity because the person wasn’t authorized to speak on the record.
Pfizer is continuing to collect and assess all available data in order to develop a COVID-19 vaccine strategy. They are also in continuous, open dialogue with regulators and health authorities in order to help inform this strategy.
Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said that the company is submitting data on a potential fourth booster shot to the FDA and that it is good enough against hospitalizations and deaths, but not as effective against infections.
